I didn't want to put it down. I loved it most because, while it shared elements with 'Jane Eyre,' it wasn't just a modern version of it. It is it's own story and full of surprises! I also loved the development of the relationship between the characters. Their banter with each other is exquisite. This is a perfect rainy-day novel, but it is more than that, too. Scenes from this book will stay with me, independent of the way 'Jane Eyre' has influenced it (though I did love those echoes when I noted them!). I am so looking forward to reading the sequel. Thank you, N. B. Roberts, for deciding to continue Thom and Alex's story.<br />

<br />
Death, or the lack of it, prompts a number of stories--two royal houses (one plagued by revenge) and two warring dukedoms, a peasant household full of pettiness and broken dreams . . . sometimes with amazing surprises, and often with the stark straightforward narrative of a novel from Dostoyevsky or Tolstoy.<br />
This is a macabre fairytale that haunts the reader, and in the end of the first book of this trilogy, the writer leaves you with a sense of endless possibility.Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-47120992188980820802013-12-20T20:34:00.001-07:002014-07-10T11:08:04.383-06:00Crossed: A Tale of the Fourth Crusade by Nicole Galland<span class="readable reviewText"><span id="freeTextContainerreview268895708">I
loved this book! As a medieval historian, I thought the take on this
moment in history was superb, but also laugh-out-loud funny--like a
marriage of Eugen Weber with Monty Python. Galland's character
development is wonderful! While the events highlighted in the story
present the sometimes tragic stupidity of western thought (and the
voracious hunger for western power), the story remains hopeful and
optimistic. I will definitely be recommending this to friends and
library patrons!</span></span>Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-33156191171238922352013-09-29T12:04:00.001-06:002013-09-29T12:05:27.099-06:00Acceptable Loss: A William Monk Novel by Anne PerryIt has been a while since I've posted anything. The "new job" and life just kind of took over, but I did want to share with you a novel that I've just finished reading. It is one of a long line of Anne Perry's William Monk novels, <i>Acceptable Loss</i>. This is the 17th novel in the series. Who would think that an author who writes 4 series (and a number of books within each of those!) could keep the storylines so fresh, intriguing and exciting. This time, things have changed between some of the major characters in the series, so the interest in the story goes up for me even more. The question is, will the quest for truth and justice prevail, or will that quest be overruled by an unbending adherence to family loyalty? There were times when the dilemmas that Oliver Rathbone faces made my stomach drop to the floor. I cannot wait to read the next novel to see how the shift in dynamics will continue to influence these characters that I have come to love. I've decided that Hester Latterly Monk is a wonderful role model, even if she is at times awkward and too outspoken (or maybe she is so wonderful because she is awkward and outspoken!).<br />

in which to read them" is not a new idea. Bibliophiles the world over
have lists of books to read and re-read, and the lists keep getting
longer (or the piles of books deeper). Prepare for the list to to get
longer, because this is a list of the <b>top ten novels or series that </b><b>are under-appreciated</b>.
Some have been overshadowed by the popularity of other books in a
similar genre and some have just remained obscure. The purpose of this
series of reviews is to explain why they should see the light of day (or
be illuminated by a reader's book light).<br />
1. <i><b>Precious Bane</b></i>
by Mary Webb, first published in 1924, is a novel set at the time of
the Napoleonic Wars, but is very different from what readers tend to
think of as a "Regency novel." It is the story of Prudence Sarn and her
brother, Gideon, who are left to make something of the farm their
father leaves behind when he dies. Gideon becomes obsessed with
ambition and wealth (his 'precious bane'). He pushes Prue to work even
harder than most men. She obeys because he promises that he will give
her the money she needs to correct her hare-lip when the farm is a
success. The story is full of harsh realities, but in the midst of
hardship arises a precious love story between Prue and Kester
Woodseaves, the local weaver. By the time the story is finished,
Prudence and Kester, and even Gideon have taken residence in the
reader's mind, and it is a story that is impossible to forget.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHCtm5BqpIhYWf8NnMMlluH3eBYn0G_FYd4Vnoa57t4ol3pcYyg-BwqLVeXesO6Io6Fc4B81WV8OzZFq00BO8wRzw-CM1aIuES6voxt6t6ZlkhwFo8zYEYz7z5-pQLCn_ZceogMNF8xe7W/s1600/Precious+Bane+Cover+Photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHCtm5BqpIhYWf8NnMMlluH3eBYn0G_FYd4Vnoa57t4ol3pcYyg-BwqLVeXesO6Io6Fc4B81WV8OzZFq00BO8wRzw-CM1aIuES6voxt6t6ZlkhwFo8zYEYz7z5-pQLCn_ZceogMNF8xe7W/s320/Precious+Bane+Cover+Photo.jpg" width="215" /></a></div>
The
characters in the story are a quirky bunch and the harsh realities of
life in this time and place are punctuated by the mystical beliefs of
the people who populate it. Gideon becomes a 'Sin Eater' at the death
of his father; Prue takes part in a plan to 'raise Venus' for the local
lord, and Sarn Mere is a giver of both life and death. All of these
moments capture the reader's imagination and memory. Stanley Baldwin,
Britain's Prime Minister at the time, was so taken with the poetic
beauty of the story that he wrote the introduction to the 1928 edition.
In the University of Notre Dame Press edition (1980), Erica Duncan
writes, " . . .what is finally evoked in us [by <i>Precious Bane</i>]
is more than the fairy tale longing that our inner beauty will be seen
so clearly it will make us beautiful before the world, it is the longing
to be known and loved for all our blemishes, our warts and wens and
contradictions, to be 'let in' whole. Thus <i>Precious Bane</i>
becomes the secret gift, our deepest dream." This novel becomes
personal to the reader in an almost holy way, simply because the
characters are human, but driven by forces that they cannot see. Their
world is real and magical at the same time. Any reader who does not
take the time to dwell within the pages of this book is missing an
opportunity to experience true beauty.Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-12104809321042204152012-11-03T08:07:00.001-06:002012-11-03T08:07:28.063-06:00When a new job comes along in a new city, there are a lot of things
to consider: where to live, where to shop, how to travel . . . it can
all be overwhelming. This is the shortlist of things movers need in new
cities--a bit of advice to take a little of the stress and worry out of
one of the biggest changes life can throw at you.<br />
<ul>
<li>Even
when renting, find a property agent. Avoid "apartment locators." Stick
with a property agent who will show you what you need to see--not just
what they want to sell. Renters need several options--not just the one
apartment complex that will pay a locator a commission. It is worth
paying for.</li>
<li>Have a good GPS system that will navigate well
through the new city streets. New inhabitants often find treasures when
they take an unnecessary turn, but they should be sure they can get
back on the right path again.</li>
<li>New inhabitants should never move
on their own. They should have some support with them in the days of
apartment hunting, information gathering, and settling down, even if the
support system is temporary.</li>
<li>The newly-employed should always
have time to undertake a move. A month is a good period of time to find
an apartment, pack and get things transported to a new location. Any
less time, and the stress will build to intolerable levels</li>
<li>Pack
an iron and ironing board in an accessible place. The movers may not
make it to a new residence by the first day of new employment.</li>
<li>Take the bus in a new city if it is available. New and needful things may pop up that would not be noticed otherwise.</li>
<li>Take extra underwear and stay in a less expensive hotel. Apartment/house hunting may take longer than expected.</li>
<li>Find
the public library. Librarians know everything and can help a new
patron to find a good grocery store, a local theater and all kinds of
other delights. They also know about things going on in the community,
and friends may be found there, too. Use the opportunity to get
involved and become part of something larger than life.</li>

Utopia. Paradise. Perfect society. What is it about
"blissful" societies that cause so many dystopian images? And
what is it about these dystopian images of society that draws readers in?
There is an attraction. <i>The Hunger Games</i> and many of the
trilogies that follow it in popularity are definite evidence of that. The
readership is captivated by worlds that are altered from current
existence. As these societies begin, their goal is perfection, but in
seeking perfection, existence for their inhabitants becomes frightening and
unbearable. The strange thing is that readers are as enticed by
these horror stories as they are by fairy tales and happily-ever-after--especially when these stories are as well-crafted and personal as Margaret
Atwood's <i>The Handmaid's Tale</i>.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlh38oA3djxQyTDSnw8hvAsSq3d3KUv-DRFzPuOfWpY8fVWBThjpZ99iV-7E-_THVLI4RA03Z3d9szRsgMRbh5dS5vVS8QzSk2TntQPkTQ3xNyCf3Mt86WK2B-By3ke6tHkcpwk07yedff/s1600/Handmaid's+Tale+Cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlh38oA3djxQyTDSnw8hvAsSq3d3KUv-DRFzPuOfWpY8fVWBThjpZ99iV-7E-_THVLI4RA03Z3d9szRsgMRbh5dS5vVS8QzSk2TntQPkTQ3xNyCf3Mt86WK2B-By3ke6tHkcpwk07yedff/s1600/Handmaid's+Tale+Cover.jpg" /></a>First published in 1986, Atwood's story is as gripping and poignant now as
it was over 25 years ago, because its outcome is more possible now than it was
then. It is a world where reading, especially for women, is prohibited.
The narrator of the story, Offred, is not an activist. She wants to live
quietly, keep her head down, and survive. She thinks constantly of her
past, of "the time before:" her husband and daughter. For
her, there is no future that she can readily imagine. She hopes only for a
glance of her former family. As a handmaid she gets caught in the
politics of a world that has become Biblical by Old Testament measures--there
is no Christianity anymore. It has been wiped out by the sect wars and the
government has been wrenched from the hands of open-minded reason and grabbed
in a manner reminiscent of Hitler's rise to power. Society becomes
idealized in a way that is bleak, colorless. Individuality is swallowed
up in rites, uniformity of dress, and down-cast eyes.<br />
Though the story is dark, the reader comes to love Offred. She had
dreams of love and a career, of family and home. She rebels in small
ways. Her narration is an act of rebellion. She constantly tells
her reader that she is not brave and looks at those she perceives as courageous
with mild envy. The reader loves her, and is caught up in her story,
because the reader is led to ask what he or she would do in the same
situation. That is what draws the reader in. She sees Offred and she sees
herself.<br />
The ending of the story is indefinite, and this reader believes that Atwood
composed the ending precisely this way so that the reader can decide what
happened. At the end of Offred's record, there are notes from a
conference of scholars, from a future generation that deliberates the
possibilities of what happened to her, why it happened, and how. Any of
these possibilities are feasible. Was she
taken? Did she escape? Did she survive? Readers can choose,
and choose their own destiny as well.Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-26205380769218699342012-09-24T19:12:00.002-06:002012-09-24T19:12:38.094-06:00New Job, New ChallengesI just started my third week with a new employer. In a lot of ways the changes have been stressful but I was able to get through all of the initial stuff: the house-hunting, the move, the new rules (or lack thereof in some cases). Now that I'm "back on my feet again, I plan to take BiblioBrainStorm off the back burner again. It's wonderful to have a new beginning with such a wide expanse of possibilities ahead. I can't wait to see where the journey takes me.Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-79860867868697190022012-08-07T01:10:00.001-06:002012-08-07T01:20:25.733-06:00Education Entrepreneurs:(I mean Information Professionals) Bringing Technology and the Liberal Arts Together<h3 class="groups title">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I just read this <a href="http://chronicle.com/blogs/next/2012/04/19/education-innovation-in-a-silo/?sid=at&utm_source=at&utm_medium=en" target="_blank">article</a> by Jeff Silingo about Education
Entrepreneurs, and the question came to me, "Aren't libraries the perfect
places to bring technical skills and the liberal arts together? Librarians do that now,
right? </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-outline-level: 3;">
<br /></div>
The idea of education-based businesses doing away with traditional schools makes my stomach drop. I see the need for change in education, but the severe focus of an education based solely on technical (or other) skills leaves such a whole in students' intellectual development. And yet, is the debate more about credentialing practices or about curriculum content? The focus seems to vacillate between the two.<br />
<br />
Jeff Silingo, the author of the article, quotes Josh Jarrett of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation “If we break up certification into packages, badges, and classes, who is
going to verify the entire package?” This does seem to be a slippery slope. How can education truly be measured--how can graduates be found to employ if no one can guarantee through comprehensive testing, discussion and practice that skills have been learned? Writing and communication must be attached to technology--and too often it is not. The focus is too much on the doing of something, and not enough on the analysis of it. Students are in danger of becoming automatons with no ability to think critically or problem-solve.<br />
<br />
I quote Silingo, because I could not communicate the point better myself:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The issue I have with Smarterer’s model, and many other [education startup] companies that
pitched here, is that it is based on educating and hiring largely
technical workers with specific skills. It’s relatively easy to provide
online courses in computer coding, and then assess that learning through
crowdsourced tests. It’s much more difficult to do that for intuitive
disciplines, like English, or softer skill sets, like critical thinking
and communication.</blockquote>
And, yet, even the forces behind these very companies admit the need for a more well-rounded education. In fact, what is needed is an even more well-rounded education than is available now. What is needed is a degree that brings together the searching investigation that thrives in the academic realm and the practical skills that are needed in the professional, career-oriented world.<br />
<br />
I ask you, does not library and information science do that already?<br />

Find the Final 2011-2012 report here: <strong><a href="http://www.ala.org/research/plftas/2011_2012#final%20report" target="_blank">Libraries Connect Communities: Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study 2011-2012</a>. </strong>I will also place a link on the Articles Page.<br />
<br />
Sadly, though libraries are being used more and more, those who fund libraries continue to think that they are a luxury, not a necessity. Hopefully, this study will help to change public perception.Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-48625871443841688402012-07-19T20:34:00.000-06:002012-07-19T20:34:49.529-06:00Updates to the LIS Articles PageI have added two very interesting pieces to the LIS Articles Page:<br />

She blended the story into an engaging novel with well-developed characters and a plot-line that made it hard for me to put the book down. For those of us who are familiar with the original, the charmingly sarcastic Lienor is still there, and so is the gorgeous Willliam of Dole. Jouglet is there too; only this time, the author lets him stay through the entire story. In fact, it is through the court minstrel's eyes that the reader is introduced to almost all of the characters. Galland did not just rewrite the original story in modern language. She added a few plot twists of her own. Those whom Renart dismissed with a snap of his fingers or wave of his hand, Galland turns into very sympathetic characters. Even those students or enthusiasts who spent a lot of time with the original will be surprised and delighted by the turn of events, as well as pleased by this picture of medieval life. You will love the story and it will haunt you for days after you have read the last page (with a smile on your face)! I look forward to reading Galland's other novels. She has won herself a dedicated fan--and that is a compliment coming from someone who is a purist when it comes to medieval literature!Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-74950201070497844602012-06-23T11:48:00.000-06:002012-06-23T11:52:55.340-06:00How Can Inaccurate Ideas about Librarians be Changed in a Positive Way?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I recently started a group on LinkedIn entitled Changing Public Perceptions about Librarians and Information Resource Professionals. The first question I wanted to ask is, "How can inaccurate ideas about librarians be changed in a positive way?" I got some wonderful feedback and wanted to share. You can find a link to the discussion <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/groups/How-can-inaccurate-ideas-about-4494078.S.125714963?qid=e28bce54-0f2d-4591-af10-71ec30cc3dce&trk=group_most_popular-0-b-ttl&goback=.gmp_4494078" target="_blank">here</a>. I won't take you through the whole discussion here, but I did want to share my responses. Here is my reaction to the initial responses I received:<br />
<br />
<span class="comment-body" data-li-comment-text="These are some great answers to the question, and you have shared wonderful ideas. Annette and Karly--You are right! Community engagement is the key and we need to put ourselves out there and get involved. One of the things that I think is great about the Douglas County Library System in the Denver area is that they take a very proactive role, not just in community engagement but in economic development. Librarians there have coordinated with local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce to help them access needed information--in a lot of ways the librarians there have made themselves indispensable to the business community, and being "indispensable" can only be a good thing in reference to relevance and job security. See http://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/features/06132012/community-reference-making-libraries-indispensable-new-way and http://douglascountylibraries.org/Community
Karly--Coordination at a national level is indeed needed. I've always thought that librarians need a national marketing campaign that can "show" people what we do. Librarians work hard on a local level, but I'd like to see a grand slam of marketing dollars be invested in PSAs or similar--that everyone in the country would see. Your observation about libraries being more than books is so true! We are tied to books so much because it was the first information resource, but there are so many other types of resources out there that we need to connect our image better with those as well.
Carolyn--Your ideas about conducting and publishing research could be part of this. Librarians are adept at research and we need to find a way to make our research publishable for public consumption, not just for academia or some "dry" study. I love that "Don't settle for half the answer" line. It is so perfect!
Chelsea--You are also right about needing to be aware of patrons and their needs. I have been guilty of getting too caught up in my computer work or whatever, too, and I've neglected to say hello or making sure patrons know I'm available to them. Some patrons need help asking for help, so we need to make them as comfortable as possible. Acknowledgement is a big part of that. How can we make ourselves indispensable if we aren't even approachable. Good point!"><span class="text"><span style="font-size: large;">These are some great answers</span> to the question, and you have shared wonderful ideas. Annette and Karly--You are right! I'll be doing a few more edits on it as I get time, but I think it can be helpful to anyone interested in the cultural history of New Mexico or the southwest.Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-67468998562059417762012-06-15T07:46:00.000-06:002012-06-15T07:49:20.875-06:00I love this blog: The Unquiet LibrarianBuffy Hamilton is a needed voice in the fields of librarianship and education. When I heard about Margot Livesey’s new book, <a href="http://margotlivesey.com/the-flight-of-gemma-hardy.html" target="_blank"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Flight of Gemma Hardy</i></a>, on Library
Journal’s Book Buzz I could hardly contain myself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Harper Publishers billed it as a modern
retelling of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Jane Eyre</i>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I am a Charlotte Bronte addict.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She is one of my favorite writers, surpassed
by only a few.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have had the internal
debate about Edward Rochester so many times that I cannot say for sure whether
he is a hero, a would-be villain, or both.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The passion and intensity between Edward Fairfax Rochester and his
reticent governess, however, cannot be denied.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>I hoped for the same from Gemma and her employer, Mr. Sinclair. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Although there are some similarities between
the stories, I do not think Ms. Livesey’s book was actually helped by the
comparison.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Gemma’s story does have some mystery, but it
is not gothic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There is never a hint
that there is danger roaming about. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
narrative never generates a feeling of ominous anticipation. I kept turning the
pages in the hope that my craving for intensity would be satisfied.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I kept wondering where it was.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I liked Gemma and I liked Mr. Sinclair.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She overcame hardship and propelled herself
to a better position in life as Jane did.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Mr. Sinclair was always kind.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He
was very likeable.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I don’t know why this
is a bad thing, except that Rochester was not always kind.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He was brusque, rude and temperamental one
moment and kind, perceptive and charming the next.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He took Jane on an emotional roller-coaster
that was constantly threatening to soar when in reality it was taking a
plunge.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There was none of this emotional
uncertainty between Mr. Sinclair and the young Miss Hardy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Mr. Sinclair did have a secret, and when Emma
learned it, she fled. But I was not convinced that her flight was actually
necessary.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It seemed born of petulance
more than of moral necessity.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I did
enjoy the book. The section prior to Emma going to school is wonderful. I love the relationship that develops between Emma and her uncle. Her experience at the school is interesting as well--the characters here are engaging and for the most part, more complete than those that Bronte sketched. I also loved the exploration of Emma's parents' histories. Margot Livesey's writing is impeccable as always, but I think the constant comparison to <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Jane Eyre</i> tainted my enjoyment of it and made it seem lackluster.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> In my opinion, the relationships here cannot be compared to those in Bronte's novel. Even the relationships Emma forms after leaving Blackbird Hall are not as intense (that is the only word that will fit!) as the connections she makes to her cousins; and St. John Rivers would have looked really good compared to the corresponding character in the modern novel. </span>I would have taken more pleasure in it had it
stood on its own merit—except for Gemma’s flight itself; in her flight, she
becomes exactly what it is she is fleeing from.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Perhaps that happens with most, if not all, idealists.</div>Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-21530131290033440962012-06-01T15:27:00.001-06:002012-06-01T15:27:56.035-06:00Updates to the Resources PageHi--<br />

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski proposes spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a digital literacy corps. Read the full New York Times article <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/30/us/new-digital-divide-seen-in-wasting-time-online.html?_r=4&pagewanted=1&hp" target="_blank">here</a>.</span> In response, Fran Bullington put forward a Call to Action. You can find her reasons for this, and the correct contact information here in Joyce Valenza's article, "<a href="http://blog.schoollibraryjournal.com/neverendingsearch/2012/05/31/arent-we-already-the-digital-literacy-corps/comment-page-1/?goback=.gmr_40592.gde_40592_member_120315955#comment-184314" target="_blank">Aren't we already the "digital literacy corps</a>?"<br />
<br />
The answer to this question is: YES!<br />
<br />
I responded to Ms. Bullington's plea by sending an email to Chairman Genachowski. If you would like to add your own email to Genachowski's inbox, I give my full permission to use any part of my email to be used as a guide, or even fully copied. <span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";">Dear
Chairman Genachowski:<br />
</span><br />
<i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";">I just read the NY Times May
30, 2012 article entitled “<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/30/us/new-digital-divide-seen-in-wasting-time-online.html?pagewanted=1&_r=2&hp" target="_blank">Wasting Time is New Digital Divide in Digital Era</a>.”
As an educator, I realize the importance of information and digital
literacy. As a librarian of 8 years' experience, I have been trained to
teach information literacy skills to people of all backgrounds, socioeconomic
statuses and levels of education. I collaborate with classroom teachers,
instructors and professors to teach lessons in which I incorporate these
skills. It is called Literacy Instruction, or sometimes Library
Instruction. In these sessions, students are taught about information
resources that are available, where to find them, and how to use them.
They are also taught how to do research and evaluate sources so that the
information they gather is valid. These skills apply to all sources, digital or
otherwise. For the digital sources, librarians teach more: how to
successfully search in databases and online, how to access digital information
through different portals and formats, and computer skills that will help
students be more proficient in gaining the information they need. They
are even taught how to use basic computer programs like the Microsoft Office
Suite. Additionally, they are taught about plagiarism and how to avoid it
by proper citation. These are just a few of the things librarians do to teach,
promote and support information literacy.</span></i><i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";"><br />
</span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";">However, the recession has
had an enormous impact on all libraries. Many programs have been
completely cut; others are being run by volunteers rather than a certified or
properly educated librarian; and other programs have lost their
assistants, whose job of handling routine procedures freed the librarian to
plan with teachers.</span></i><br />
<br />
<i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";"></span></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-right: 1.5in;">
<i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";">I noticed that the FCC is considering “a
proposal to spend $200 million to create a digital literacy corps. This group
of hundreds, even thousands, of trainers would fan out to schools and libraries
to teach productive uses of computers for parents, students and job seekers.”</span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";">Although I applaud the intent
of teaching digital literacy skills to our students, I question the expenditure
of these funds. Why not instead funnel these funds into library programs
to allow trained, certified professionals to teach the skills? We have
what is needed, we just need the support to make it happen. Will you
provide that support?</span></i><i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";"><br />
</span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";">I look forward to hearing
from you on this vital issue.</span></i><br />
<br />
<br />
<i><span style="font-family: "Franklin Gothic Medium","sans-serif";">Many thanks and all best,</span></i><br />

me in keeping abreast of what is going on in the industry. There are several
webcasts available, both upcoming and archived. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: small;">For those of us currently between
jobs, this is a good way to keep up with many different trends. The LJ website also includes a
number of newsletters that might be helpful, as well as a Job Zone. This includes traditional and non-traditional positions in the field. The "Tech" tab lets the reader in on innovations in technology and the possible effects of them for/in libraries. Other sections include: News, Opinion, Reviews and Social Media. Much of what is available in these tabs is included in the above-mentioned monthly, bi-weekly or weekly electronic newsletters, should you choose to subscribe to them. I have just re-subscribed to a few and I'm looking forward to perusing them--and to participating in the webcasts. I always feel a hum of enthusiastic excitement when the Book Buzz comes out!</span></div>

However much I love Shakespeare--and I DO LOVE
SHAKESPEARE--the man was writing for the good graces and on the good
will of the Tudors and the Stuarts. To do that, he often had to write
Tudor-supporting propaganda (which is why Richard III is evil in his
book, when actually he was quite an amicable man). Susan Fraser King
wrote a novel more in line with historical fact. Her characters are
flawed, they are human, but they have hearts and are pushed and prodded
by circumstance more than by ambition. In this realm, Macbeth and his
wife are loved by their people and their country; he actually holds the
knife when he would have done them all more good by "plunging it in!"
He is not the pitiable murderer we have all come to know and does not
live under/behind his lady-wife's skirts; he is actually a king who has
his country's best interests at heart. The writing is magnificent as
well. King pulls you in with her first line and keeps you hooked until
the last. I felt an aching loss when I finished this book. Like the
play however, Macbeth dies at the end, so there won't be a sequel,
unless Lady Macbeth's fate ties in with that of some other clan. It
may, but I doubt she'll be the central character again.Laura Faatzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17576532780984019095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5053312243766200499.post-30616217689487929522012-05-30T00:42:00.003-06:002012-05-30T00:44:44.823-06:00A Great Site for Information Professionals-Infopeople<h3 class="groups title" style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

Here, the library became a center of the community by demonstrating their value as a place to find needed resources, aid in career networking and become a leading voice in community affairs. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Some interesting games have been brought to my attention. These are not video/computer games, but good old-fashioned board games. I think these have potential for building social interaction, story-telling, imagination and word usage. At the moment I'm thinking these would be for public and middle school libraries, but I'm sure that image could be expanded. <br />
<br />
<br />
The first is called Quiddler. It's a short word game, ages 8 to adult and it
can have up to 8 players. I meant to play it with my niece and nephews
while in Denver but they were busy and I completely forgot about it.
Here's the official site: http://www.quiddler.us/. It does seem to have potential. Basically, you combine all the letters in your hand into words, and longer words get more points. There can be rules added to make the game more involved and challenging. I imagine it as a more fast-paced, basic "Scrabble."<br />
<br />
Another game I've heard about (at the Utah Library Association
conference last year) is called Faux*cabulary. I have never had the
chance to play this but it looked like so much fun. With all that's
going on, I have yet to buy it. It seemed very versatile and funny, and
I think it could help students gain an appreciation for precise word
choices. That makes it sound boring, doesn't it? It certainly doesn't
look boring (at least not to a "word nerd" like me!). Actually, Out of
the Box Publishing produces a lot of interesting games, and I'd suggest taking a look at their other offerings as well. The age range is thirteen to
adult, and it takes about 30 minutes to play--so it's good for lunch breaks.

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5i6jNta5LFmaKq3_Fah9rmb81HKJHw1bR731mDwmxrx2Kq446oY9MxJ6MoS8rYLsx6r-meCtoU5D0Rul9T44m33GM-E7xpJTAi2f9Cx3o8S1LFLyg-3jCdFchJM_WfcgeBItflgrKfBHi/s1600/Letter+Head.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5i6jNta5LFmaKq3_Fah9rmb81HKJHw1bR731mDwmxrx2Kq446oY9MxJ6MoS8rYLsx6r-meCtoU5D0Rul9T44m33GM-E7xpJTAi2f9Cx3o8S1LFLyg-3jCdFchJM_WfcgeBItflgrKfBHi/s1600/Letter+Head.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
A third game is called "Letterhead." I won this at the same
conference I mentioned above. I have yet to play it as well, because it's packed up in a
storage unit somewhere until I can relocate, but it looks .
. . engaging and interesting. I found a document that gives suggestions for how to
use this game in the classroom:
http://www.atlas-games.com/pdf_storage/LetterHeadClassroom.pdf. These
cards actually allow players to play several different games with them. I
don't have an official site for this one, but this site seems to have
some good information:
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/783/letter-head.<br />
<br />
I've heard a lot of talk lately about molding the library to be a center-of-the-community, and game challenge nights are one way librarians are drawing families in. These might be some good options if you're interested in pursuing this. <br />
